[Guide] mIRC ssl connection

A verified SSL certification has been installed in our ZNC.
The following text is a tutorial to install ssl libraries on your system:

Using SSL with mIRC

mIRC supports secure server connections with SSL using the OpenSSL library. To use SSL with mIRC you will need to download and install the OpenSSL library.

Where can I download the OpenSSL library?

An installer for OpenSSL 1.0.1c can be found here: openssl-1.0.1c-setup.exe

Where do I install the OpenSSL library?

You will need to install it either in the mIRC folder (typically C:\Program Files\mIRC) or in the Windows System folder (typically C:\Windows\System32).

If you install it in the mIRC folder, OpenSSL will be usable only by mIRC.
If you install it in the Windows System folder, OpenSSL will be usable by all applications.

What do I do next?

You can now run mIRC and it should find and use the OpenSSL library automatically. To confirm whether mIRC has loaded the OpenSSL library, you can open the Options dialog and look in the Connect/Options section to see if the "SSL" button is enabled.

You can also check the $sslready identifier to determine whether mIRC has loaded the OpenSSL library successfully.

To initiate a secure connection to an SSL capable server, you can use the /server -e switch, or prefix the port number with a plus sign, eg. +7001. Once connected, the variable $ssl can be used to determine whether the current connection is secure.

Why would I need a secure connection?

mIRC is used by many organizations, from corporate to governmental, that need to communicate over secure connections. Various educational organizations that provide online teaching also require communications that are secure for privacy reasons. Apart from that, many individuals around the world also depend on secure communications, whether for personal, political, business, or other reasons. Whether you need to use secure communications depends on your own personal circumstances. If it's not something that you think you need then you probably don't.

Important issues to note

Information you exchange with an IRC server over a secure connection cannot be viewed or modified by others. However, be aware that traffic between public servers on a network is exchanged over plain, unencrypted lines. This means that if you want to be sure that your communication is secure, you and the person with whom you want to communicate securely should both connect to the same SSL-capable server, and communicate via a query window. If talking on a channel, be aware that everyone on the channel must be on a secure connection. If one person on the channel is not on a secure connection, your communications on that channel will not be secure.

Note: The first time you connect to a ssl server, a window will popup and show you some information about the certificate. You need to accept that window in order to continue with the connection.

Verwendung von SSL mit mIRC

mIRC unterstützt die sichere Server-Verbindung SSL mit der OpenSSL-Datei. Zur Verwendung mit mIRC SSL müssen Sie downloaden und installieren Sie die OpenSSL-Datei.

Wo kann ich die OpenSSL-Datei Downloaden?

Ein Installationsprogramm für OpenSSL 1.0.1c kann hier gefunden werden: openssl-1.0.1c-setup.exe

Wo installiere ich die OpenSSL-Datei?

Sie müssen es entweder in dem mIRC Ordner installieren in (normalerweise C: \ Program Files \ mIRC) oder in den Windows-Systemordner (typischerweise C: \ Windows \ System32).

Wenn Sie es in dem mIRC-Ordner installieren, wird OpenSSL ausschließlich für mIRC verwendet.
Wenn Sie es in den Windows-Systemordner installieren, wird OpenSSL für alle Anwendungen nutzbar sein.

Was muss ich als nächstes tun?

Sie können mIRC nun ausführen, und die OpenSSL-Datei sollte nun automatisch starten. Um zu überprüfen  ob mIRC die OpenSSL geladen hat können sie folgendermaßen überprüfen in dem Sie das Dialogfeld öffnen Connect / Option (alt+o) um zu sehen ob die Funktion SSL aktiviert wurde.
 

Sie können nun überprüfen ob SSL  verfügbar ist, und ob mIRC die Einstellungen erfolgreich übernommen und geladen hat.

Um eine sichere Verbindung zu einem SSL-fähigen Server starten, können Sie zum /server-e wechseln, oder Präfix die Port-Nummer mit einem Pluszeichen, zB. 7001. Einmal verbunden, können Sie die Variablen $ssl verwenden, um feststellen, ob die aktuelle Verbindung sicher ist.

Warum brauche ich eine sichere Verbindung?

mIRC wird von vielen Organisationen genutzt, u.a von Firmen an die Regierung, die eine Kommunikation über sichere Verbindungen benötigen. Verschiedene Bildungseinrichtungen, die Online-Unterricht anbieten fordern auch eine sichere Kommunikation. Abgesehen davon, viele Menschen auf der ganzen Welt auch von einer sicheren Kommunikation abhängig sind, ob für den persönlichen, politischen, wirtschaftlichen oder anderen diversen Gründen. Ob Sie eine sichere Kommunikation verwenden, hängt von Ihrer persönlichen Lage ab. Wenn Sie denken das Sie das nicht benötigen, dann wahrscheinlich eher nicht.

Wichtige Fragen zu beachten

Informationen die Sie mit einem IRC-Server tauschen über eine sichere Verbindung kann nicht angezeigt oder geändert werden durch andere. Beachten Sie jedoch, dass der Traffic zwischen einem öffentlichen Server in einem Netzwerk einfach ausgetauscht werden kann,  d.h über eine unverschlüsselte Leitung. Dies bedeutet, dass, wenn Sie sicher sein wollen das Ihre Kommunikation sicher ist, Sollten Sie und die Person einen SSL-fähigen Server nutzen, und kommunizieren Sie über eine Query (Privatchat). Wenn Sie über einen Channel kommunizieren muss ihnen bewusst sein, dass jeder in dem Channel  eine sichere Verbindung nutzen sollte. Wenn eine Person in dem Channel keine sichere Verbindung nutzt nicht, wird ihre Kommunikation in diesem Channel nicht sicher sein.

Hinweis: Das erste Mal wenn Sie eine SSL Verbindung starten erscheint eine Popup Fenster das ihnen einige Informationen des Zertifikates anzeigt. Sie müssen das Fenster Akzeptieren um die sichere Verbindung fortzusetzen.

Für die Nutzung der SSL-Verbindung, verwenden Sie den folgenden Code (Ändern Sie ihren Benutzername und Passwort mit Ihrem ZNC Login Daten).
